Follow me?! On Facebook or Twitter, LinkedIn or YouTube? I hear it all the time, from news hen Jane Talkative at XYZ.com or my 60 “friends?” I can’t “follow” all of them. Do I even want to? I’m a bit overwhelmed by all the social media. Who should I follow?
Well, Jesus said, “Follow me.” That sounds more like it. He’s worth “following.” But how? Pastor Jan Hettinga authored a book, “Follow Me” which examines the kingdom of heaven, challenging you to see what keeps you from truly following Jesus. I’d like to learn what this “kingdom” is all about, and what “following Jesus” really means. Dr. Hettinga walks the walk, planting and inspiring a bunch of new churches right here in the Puget Sound area. He’ll inspire you. He oozes grace, sort of like Jesus.
Pastor Jan Hettinga is speaking Saturday morning 9:30-10:40am.

Hey, I’m 16 years old and getting bored with my smart phone and video games and TV. I like sports though. But I’d like to do something for someone else for a change. Not just me. Maybe some poor kids in another country. Yeah, maybe collect stuff for them that they need but are too poor to buy.
I’ve heard kids my age are getting things together like toothbrushes to send to poor students in the Philipines. That’s something I can do! They say it’s part of the program for teens at Missions Fest Seattle. How do I get involved? Would you let me know how to sign up? Awesome! But please hurry. I want to get going.

At what age did you chose to follow Jesus? I hope you have. Most people begin their journey with God before they grow up. They’re still exploring what life’s all about. Greg Lyons did and look what happened. After graduate degrees, he’s spent the next 26 years targeting young people in Manila where 39% of people are 15 or younger, and 68% age 29 or younger. Like Willie Sutton robbed banks because that’s where the money was, God called Greg to expose kids to the life-changing good news of God’s love, perhaps because they listen and respond. Greg’s done it.
You can hear his stories. Nearly half a million young people learn of Jesus in Manila alone. Kids hear of him at basketball camps. A large Bible School trains future leaders for Asia and missionaries for the world. Church planters envision expanding the new 13 congregations to 100. Maybe our vision here in the United States is too small. Or that we need another Greg Lyons, some young person in the pipeline. Come and be challenged to ask why it couldn’t it happen here? Or is God already at work here too?
Greg Lyons is speaking Saturday evening 7:00-8:45pm (combined adult and youth plenary).

“You’ve never heard of Luis Palau? How about Billy Graham? Martin Luther?”
“Okay, I’ve heard of most these men past and present whose work God has blessed incredibly. But when I read about Palau sharing his faith with 25 million people in 72 countries, and one million deciding to follow Jesus, I’m overwhelmed. How did Palau come to do that? How did God call him? What is the source of his power? How does his presenting Jesus lead to so many coming to Him?
“What can I do by contrast? I want to share the good news too, but I seem so limited, so hesitant. I know God lives in me, and that he can do more than I can even imagine, according to the power that is at work in me. ‘So help me Lord, through hearing your servant Luis Palau, to learn what you want me to do in your kingdom here or far away. And help me to accept that I am just me, and that your power is made perfect in weakness. Inspire me, empower me, to be clay in your hands to represent you well here and now.’”
Luis Palau is speaking Friday evening 7:00-8:30pm.

Conflict—international or religious, political and personal. It’s everywhere and never ends. Jesus experienced it. Despite his love for his enemies, they took his life. Paul for his sharing of the good news, nearly died from stoning. Jesus followers today experience conflict, sometimes life threatening outside the U.S., or more subtle here. If we’re his, we’re in a battle. Not with each other, or Muslims whom God loves, but as Paul wrote, “against the powers of this dark world…”
How do you handle it? Are danger and opportunity opposite sides of the same coin? Can God turn the lemons of conflict into lemonade? Russell Stendal, a prisoner of the Lord, and the Colombian guerillas, found a way to return to that same jungle with the message of God’s love. How can the Lord help you turn your conflict into eternal treasure? Stendal will be sharing his journey in October.
Russell Stendal is speaking Saturday afternoon 2:15-3:30.

Arabs, Muslims, Islam—I’m scared of terrorists. Aren’t they trying to take over America? I don’t understand them. Well no, I’ve never talked with a Muslim. I don’t know one or much about them. Maybe they’re frightened of us too? How come they persecute Christians in the Middle East? I’ve heard that many are coming to follow Jesus. He must love them too. What did he mean I should love my enemy? How can I? I’d like to meet an Arab Christian who can explain all this.
You can. Renajoy from Bagdad, a child of a Sunni father and Christian mother, turned to Christ, and experienced attempted kidnappings, a fatwa on her life, and fled to Jordan because even traditional churches there suspected her. You’ll begin to understand Islam and what Jesus meant about loving your enemy.
Renajoy’s seminar topic is Middle East the True Promise. Renajoy will speak on Saturday 12:30 – 1:30 in Room 304ABC.

Somali kids, starving! Have you seen their pictures on TV? Heart wrenching. Neglected orphans in Romania, Afghan girls denied education, Asian kids sold in sex trade. Children in crisis world-wide, 1.8 billion of them. Is there anything we can do beyond sending money? What realistically can we do as Jesus’ hands and feet, his people? He said, “Let them come to me…for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” He also said, “…whatever you did for one of the least of these…you did for me.”
Doug Nichols with a lifetime of putting many feet into ACTION will guide us in October.
Doug’s seminar topic is The Need for Ministry to Children in Crisis. Come hear Doug speak Saturday 11am – 12 noon in the Fireside Room.

C’mon now, we’re a Christian country, right? What do you mean, “post-Christian?” Most people in America claim to believe in God! Okay, our American pop culture doesn’t talk about Jesus, except in exclamation! And our public schools, well you’re right, we’ve kicked God out of them. So you say we’re becoming “post Christian” like Europe? Yeah, I guess it’s true. Most of my friends and neighbors don’t seem interested in the Lord. What can I do? Are there some prerequisites to sharing Christ? What’s an effective strategy to reach our friends in a post-Christian world?
Dr Joseph R. Ziska, D.Miss., working in Austria since 1979 has lots of experience to share in October.
Dr Joseph R. Ziska, D.Miss. will be presenting his seminar, Theological Education Which Strengthens the Church on Saturday, 11:00 – 12:00pm in room 406.
